  1. Then he told me a third story, from his earlier years with the Mets. Again, he was pitching in the later innings with runners on base. Before the catcher threw the ball back to him, Tom crouched like a quarterback in the huddle, propped his elbows on his knees and stared at the dirt. His pitching coach, Rube Walker, came hustling out to the mound. Rube said, "Tom. Tom, you all right? You hurt? Maybe you should come out." Tom looked up at him, as if he had no idea why Rube was there. He said, "What the hell you doing here? This is my mound, get the fuck off it." Rube said, "But Gil [Hodges] thought you may be in trouble." Tom said, "Trouble? I was fucking thinking. Now get the fuck out of here." 2. Pat Jordan. Tom Seaver. Sports On Earth. Go. Now.

  4. Put a period on Colon deal: Confirmed by Rubin as 2 for 20.
  5. A couple of months into what was proving a disastrous Met tenure, I came across an ESPN the Magazine from when Kaz first hit the market and it glowed over how this guy was the shnizzle fo' shizzle or whatever young person's slang was in vogue then. Maybe that's where the Mets got the idea that Matsui was surefire. I also recall Bruce Wilpon, the family member with "business interests in Japan" told Dad that ya gotta get this guy. Met Clubhouse Store on 54th was lousy with MATSUI 25 merch until that location closed due to lack of interest.
  6. Or not. Still talking, reports have been amended.
  7. Add a Colon to the pitching staff for the next 2 years. Mets just did that.
  8. Jerry Hairston, Jr. -- Playing for the Dodgers TV booth next year.
  9. Angell worked extra hard, got better and proved himself every bit the equal of Madden. The system works!
  10. The honor's all his, says Roger. "It's a great day -- for me, if not for baseball," he said. "I was surprised to find out how much secretly I had hoped this would happen because I was very moved, startled and extremely pleased. I thought it would never happen because I'm not a member of the [bBWAA]. I'm very, very happy and I'm stunned. Old friends and idols have won this award. It's a great honor." Angell's not in the almighty BBWAA because they don't/didn't accept magazine writers, a distinction one assumes is no longer relevant as magazines aren't exactly a threat to the integrity of the daily baseball beat. (A few online-only types have been initiated in recent years, including Jonah Keri this week.) Thus someone who's been watching baseball since the 1930s (grew up a Giants fan) and been writing about it up close and at a distance since the 1960s has never had a Hall of Fame vote. Which isn't the worst thing in the world. Just strange.

  12. Mets have re-signed Hefner, will pay him to rehab from TJS.
  13. "A lot of the people I've met in New York have always said that, 'True New Yorkers are Mets fans,'" Granderson said after donning his No. 3 Mets jersey for the first time. "So I'm excited to get a chance to see them all out there." Just to parse this a step further, I like that Curtis claims it's something he's "always" had said to him. I wonder what his interactions with the people he's met in New York have gone like exactly since he first played as an MFY. "Hi, meet my friend Curtis Granderson." "Good to meet you, Curtis." "Curtis here is with a local baseball team." "Oh Curtis, I do hope you're attached to the Mets, lest the front-runners and tourists get on your nerves." "Ah yes, Curtis, I should've warned you about true New Yorkers. They won't be impressed with your affiliation until it meshes with theirs."
  14. Santiago was Harvey's worthy White Sox opponent the night the 2013 GIBBY Breakout Pitcher flirted with perfection.
  15. FYI, there may be another WAR in our time, per mlb.com's Tony DiComo. A name I've heard multiple times regarding #Mets Opening Day bullpen: Jeff Walters. Team likes potential of him, Black, Familia, Germen.

  17. And don't forget my Joey dearest...
  18. Not Cedarhurst. Not Inwood. Not Hewlett. Not Woodmere. But as Five Towns Mets go, Brian Lawrence.
  19. This quiz is tough on all, but Gene Walter was allegedly death on lefthanders.
  20. Jason Bay, whose last name may as well have been Warning Track Power.
  21. The "a lot of people have told me" part immediately snapped off as "True New Yorkers are Mets fans" has gone vibrantly viral. Beats "pay me enough and I'll tell you you're beautiful."
