  1. Pinch-homer vs. Marlins on Huey Lewis Concert Day during that brief and shining moment when it was 1983 all up in here. That's the power of love! Otherwise, wow, he sucked.

  6. Cam didn't head up to Binghamton but was named to Florida State League All-Star team for his work at Port St. Lucie.

  14. Following a brief stint on the dL, deGrom takes on the doDodgers. An hour earlier tonight. Channel 11 in the NY Metropolitan Area. Also, Greinke on the hill made famous by Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale, lest their names not come up in the course of the game.

  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: What about Kansas City? KC was notable for being baseball-only while the multipurpii were riding high. Recent facelift to make it a bit more quaint-ish ensures its longevity. It's placement in a parking lot off the Interstate (adjacent to football-only Arrowhead) probably detracts from its aura.
  17. While GQ catches up with its former cover subject, Keith Hernandez.
  18. Rolling Stone follows around Mr. Met. Learn, too, what Mrs. Met does all week.
  19. Thanks. I'd actually forgotten the motivational role the happier-ended Game Seven provided. But as long as history was changing, what the hell?
  20. 1974 and 1989 were similar in that apparently everything was viewed as fine, nothing to tinker with here as the season following a title of some sort approached. No new Mets in '74 until June and only one -- Aalphabetical Aase -- in '89, also until June. the Mets had made a big trade during the preceding offseason, sending Wally Backman away for three minor league Twins (giving Gregg Jefferies space to find himself), but none of those Minnesota farmhands ever saw Flushing. By the end of 1989, the dam burst and plenty of New Mets (Viola, Samuel, Musselman among them) had been introduced. 1974 did bring early looks at Swan and Apodaca, who were cameoists in September '73. Also, Bob Miller had returned at the tail end of the pennant race and was, shall we say, "like new" in '74, leading the pitching staff in appearances a dozen years after he contributed mightily (1-12) to legendary futility.
  21. Oh, what might have been.
