  1. Rico Brogna -- with a continued career in baseball but how can he not be in this thread? -- is controlling quality for the Angels.
  2. Notoriously slow upon arrival. Then not particularly Trachselian most outings. More useful than would've dreamed. Good luck back where the Rising Sun lands.
  3. Daisuke Matsuzaka heading back to Japan to pitch for your Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.
  4. Crystal is MFY through and through. Joel is a celebrity fan who thinks it's great when New York wins. And FWIW, in the six years since his show, he's never disowned the association, never backtracked, never said anything along the lines of "Willie Randolph just went from sleeping with Pamela Anderson to Louie Anderson," as Crystal did when Willie Randolph came home to manage his childhood team. Sotomayor could have used a better line, but I'm not offended.
  5. Willingham shares a distinction with Joe Torre, Glenn Beckert, Chico Walker, Lance Parrish, Dmitri Young and Keith Lockhart -- made the last out of a Mets postseason-berth clincher.
  6. Tonight we honor Long Islands favorite son, even if he is a Mets fan. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor (MFY fan), presenting the Library of Congress George Gershwin Award for Popular Song to Billy Joel, November 19, 2014
  7. Syndicated Peanuts strip on November 22, 2014, originally ran in 1967: LUCY (to Linus, whos sitting in front of the television): Little brothers should stand when big sisters enter the room. LINUS (standing): Youre right...I beg your pardon... [LINUS stands and thinks while sits and watches television) LINUS: Little brothers are the New York Mets of life!
  8. The Mets need speed. The Mets need power. The Mets need pitching. That's what I'm thinking about right now [...] I would take any one of the three: speed, power or pitching. Jim Harper to Maggie Jordan, ignoring her EPA report scoop, The Newsroom, "Main Justice," S3, E3, November 23, 2014 (ep takes place on April 22, 2013)
  9. More a Gerald than a Milhouse, methinks.
  10. Your new Minnesota Twins pitching coach is Neil Allen.
  11. Rockies sign John Lannan and Aaron Laffey to minor league deals.
  12. Josh Satin is Red in the uniform, signing with Cincy.
  13. Josh Satin has signed with the Reds. There goes the last third of the Stinson-Schwinden-Satin triumvirate of September 2011. I'll hold fondly a nice hot streak from the middle of 2013, of a piece with EY arriving to steal bases and Wheeler shedding his Super Two baggage. There was a Friday night at the end of June when he delivered a booming double that made a Harvey Night crowd explode with ecstasy. Thought it was going out. Thought the Mets were gonna beat the Nats. Thought Harvey was gonna rack up another win. Thought the Mets were on the rise. None of those thoughts converted to reality, and it was mostly downhill from there for Satin. Seems like a good kid, though. Hope it works out well for him in Cincy, give or take six games a year.

  15. Meanwhile, pulling down rebounds and knocking down bodies at Madison Square Garden -- which I was initially convinced was outdoors in that it was a garden and the first place I had seen basketball played was the East School playground -- was, according to how I heard it, power forward Dave the Butcher.
  16. Banner Day returns June 14, a Sunday.
  17. Cam & Jenn, just married. The happy couple is honeymooning in St. Lucia.
  18. The learning continued in AFL ball, per Davidoff in the Pest.
  19. Ray Burris will be coaching Triple-A Phillie pitchers before they ascend to the majors and hopefully pitch like Triple-A Phillie pitchers.
  20. Ray Sadecki's Mets career was more singular than you might suspect. Sadecki pitched in 165 games, starting 62, relieving in 103. According to Baseball References Play Index tool, no Met who started that many games ever relieved in so many and no Met who relieved in so many games ever started as many. Also, he had a knack for showing up in doubleheaders, pitched far more complete games than you'd imagine a spot starter would and shares a distinction with three noted Met firemen one eventual Hall of Famer. Plus I'm still a little surprised his name wasn't one word.
  21. And of course the godfather of the Sadecki Spot.
  22. RIP, the quintessential Met swingman, Ray Sadecki, who died Monday at 73 of blood cancer. 62 starts, 103 relief appearances as a Met from 1970-1974 and 1977. Well-loved veteran lefty. Won 20 for the Cards in 1964. Next to Seaver, my favorite pitcher from my first full year as a Mets fan, his first as a Met. http://www.kansascity.com/sports/mlb/article4002240.html
  23. Tribe re-signs Shaun Marcum to a minor league contract, an excellent investment should they plan on playing 20-inning games.
  24. Edgy MD wrote: Nicer story at FaFiF. Thank you. Good Seaver to all!
  25. We were in Houston, at a ballgame, and I saw a man steal a foul ball from a boy. It was flagrant the man just took the ball right away from the boy, and he held it up high like it was the head of Medusa, and I said: Would you look at this jerk? Whats that? Buck said. That guy down there, he just took that ball away from that kid. Buck considered the situation. He said: Dont be so hard on him. He might have a kid of his own at home. Yes, that was Buck ONeil he just saw the best in people, even people who took foul balls away from little kids. Maybe hes got a kid at home. That was a good one; I had to give Buck credit, only then something occurred to me. Wait a minute, I said to Buck. If hes got a kid, why didnt he bring him to ballgame? I smiled triumphantly. But Buck did not hesitate. Maybe, he said, the kid is sick. Read "Buck" by Joe Posnanski.
