  1. If next week we meet "my colleague, Dr. Maury Allen," then we'll know something's up.
  2. A new TV Mets fan joins the prime time ranks: Eric Lewandoski (Nathan Torrence), 34, toll collector and one of the Weird Loners on Fox. In the pilot episode that aired March 31, we meet Eric as he wears a Mets baseball shirt (skyline logo) and watches a game with his dad (wearing a 2013-14 style alternate cap). In their game, an announcer says it's the bottom of the ninth and Wright is up. Father and son argue over whether a base on balls would be an acceptable outcome. Then the pop drops dead. Eric is concerned until he hears the announcer say the batter swings. He turns toward the television and...SCENE. Reviews indicate we'll be seeing more Mets stuff in this Queens-set program (the title characters -- two guys, two gals -- live in Ridgewood and blow off steam by wandering over to the Unisphere where they partake of an open bar at a weeknight wedding that just happens to be going on for their bonding needs). Also, what likely appears to be a one-off character, a dermatologist who is jilted by one of the other Loners. His name (the doctor) is Howard Blatt, who used to cover the Mets for the Daily News. That's probably a coincidence, but who knows?
  3. Grandy left game from HBP on right knee. Harvey awesome, I hear.
  4. Glad the thread title doesn't refer to overzealous law enforcement officials in Arizona. Contract is a bargain considering Juan will likely be playing center and left simultaneously this year. Is this the first Mets extension since Wright's?
  5. I think they just went with whatever fit the moment in the film. They also used Doc from somewhere between 1988 and 1992 when they talked about him as a rookie. The only people who'd notice this stuff are, as usual, the people who appreciate this kind of film the most in the first place.
  6. Grantland 30 For 30 short is tremendously satisfying. See what Ronn Reynolds looks like in the 21st century! Only nitpick: strange decision to use footage from '73 WS (Millan error, Willie pleading on Buddy's behalf) to represent the Mets going downhill in the '70s. Huh?
  7. I'm just sorry Torres isn't from Texas and doesn't speak with a braggadocio he can't back up because he cries out to be referred to as all hat and no cattle.
  8. Green was gone by November of '96. Though DiPoto and Brogna were surely from his era, I don't think of anybody as a "Dallas Green player" given his seemingly utter contempt for just about every Met who played for him here.
  9. HAT STUFF! --Back page of News when Alex comes in to rescue Mejia and save the sweep of the first Subway Series.
  10. Somebody better shoot a WPIX-TV promo in which Jerry declares we're watching Blevins Alive.
  11. Got to meet MdD on the final Friday night last September. He was the random player Jay Horwitz grabbed for the handful of bloggers on premises. Nice kid, I thought. Not a lot of remarkable insights. Said he needed an adjustment period from the minors to the majors, was looking forward to finishing strong, confirmed it was a long season. I asked him about Bobby Abreu since he had just announced his retirement and he talked about admiring his attitude and confidence. Matt planned to take a few weeks off to heal and then get back to baseball activity soon. He looked forward to Spring Training. Still think he's a nice kid. Hope he does well for himself if not the Nationals.
  12. 84-78 (can imagine anywhere between 78 and 94) 2nd Place (strong ST has elevated them above MIA in my mind) But no playoffs
  13. Harvey was awesome.
  14. "Jesus, I just hope he doesn't take playing time away from Rick Ankiel."
  15. Gwreck wrote: What can you tell me about Mickey Weston? Mickey Weston's basically the nicest Michigan guy in the world, according to a source who should be reliable on the subject. When I think of Mickey Weston, my mind drifts to Jeff Kaiser. Got something to fill my mind with there?
  16. MFS62 wrote: Tell us something about Steve Dillon Steve's last game was Shea's first night game. How about that Ryan McGuire?
  17. Somebody take a flier on Filer. Tom Filer. Tom Filer pitched for the Mets on the Fourth of July. He let freedom ring -- and the Astros win (he pitched well in defeat, actually, on America's 216th birthday). Since I conflate Tom Filer with Mike Birkbeck, lay a little Birkbeck on me.
  18. Truly a real Buck. Be sure to ground out 6-3 in his memory tonight.
  19. Did a little figuring the other day and found the Mets have suited up and deployed in at least one game 261 different players since Faith and Fear came on the air in 2005. I can probably remember something, even a tiny something, specific about 260 of them. I remember next to nothing about Jose Santiago, who threw 5 2/3 innings of relief our first blogging summer, among them two at Shea, which came in a game Jason and I attended and that I clearly recall the tenor and outcome of. But I have no memory of Santiago's participation per se. (Nor that of two future Met relievers.) I think Jose had been caught up in some kind of nefarious roster numbers game earlier that season, the Mets having him on hand but not activating him, the kind of thing they'd be allowed to taxi-squad for today if there was injury. (Yes, something like that.) Perhaps somebody here remembers Santiago. Nobody here does.
  20. Lynch vs. Seaver in this completely forgotten classic (not that just about everything doesn't get forgotten after 34 or so years). Tom was great, Mets outlasted him. Crucial in the split-season charge the Mets were making at first place that late August. Also, I've decided, critical in costing Tom the 1981 Cy Young. Bob Bailor's finest game as a Met. Drove in winning run, saved game with phenomenal catch.
  21. According to Marty and Joe, it was Pat's turn, but Kooz asked the manager for the slot and Torre granted his wish (to Zachry's displeasure, they added).
  22. Tom Seaver returns to face the Mets for the first time and you can listen to it here! The catch is it's the Reds broadcast team of Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall, big fans of the first-person plural. It was recorded from the Reds' affiliate in Terre Haute (where dreadful weather is coming, according to an alert) and it's on a site that seems a mite obsessed with JFK's assassination -- but it's Seaver at Shea, whatever the uniforms look and the voices sound like.
  23. [youtube:3dt22dtl]wBFZaFpGTnU[/youtube:3dt22dtl] Ray Watts, so tired, tired of waiting..."Til The Mets Win The Pennant".
  24. Harvey's not only back, but he's profiled in new NY Magazine (by Chris Smith, who seems to be their NYM longform correspondent of record). Bottom line: Harvey's awesome, but you already knew that. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2015/03/matt-harvey-mets-superstar.html
  25. Wilmer in a walking boot after foul ball off the foot. Going for x-ray. Enough with the "ouchies" already.
