Series Breakdown/Highlights

Guardians Series: Coming off a bad weekend against the Marlins and an off day, the Mets headed on the road to face the Guardians in Cleveland.

The Mets opened the week with a strong all-around performance, jumping on Cleveland early and never giving up the lead. Luis Torrens delivered the biggest blow with a three-run homer in the second inning after a big error, and Bo Bichette followed with a solo shot in the third as New York quickly built a four-run advantage. Sean Manaea continued his recent turnaround, working six innings and limiting Cleveland to two runs before the bullpen finished the job. The Mets added insurance later in the game and opened their road trip with a convincing 6-2 victory.

Game two was much more dramatic. Brett Baty opened the scoring with a home run as the Mets built an early advantage, but Cleveland battled back and eventually grabbed a 5-4 lead in the seventh. New York refused to go quietly, tying the game in the ninth, thanks in part to the Guardians defense, before pushing across another run in the 10th to regain the lead. The bullpen finally shut the door in the bottom half, giving the Mets a 6-5 extra-inning victory and securing the series win.

The Mets saved their biggest offensive performance of the series for the finale. The Guardians scored twice in the first inning, but the Mets immediately responded with three in the second and two more in the third to take control. The home team made things interesting by cutting the deficit to one in the fifth, but the Mets exploded for seven runs between the seventh and eighth innings to turn the game into a rout. New York finished with 18 hits and 13 runs, completing the three-game sweep and leaving Cleveland with plenty of offensive momentum.

Pirates Series: Coming fresh off the sweep in Cleveland, the Mets came into Pittsburgh riding high and kept their mojo going.

The first game kicked off the weekend in excellent fashion with a 6-4 victory. Their offense once again did enough damage to build a lead, and although Pittsburgh made things interesting, New York was able to protect the advantage late. The victory extended the Mets' winning streak to four games and continued an impressive start to the post-trade-deadline portion of their schedule.

Unfortunately, that streak came to an abrupt end Saturday night as Bubba Chandler and the Pirates completely shut down the Mets' offense. New York was held scoreless for the first time on the road trip while Pittsburgh erupted for nine runs. It was a complete reversal from what the Mets had done offensively in Cleveland, and the nine-run defeat was easily their ugliest performance of the week. Still, the Mets entered Sunday's rubber game with an opportunity to finish the trip with consecutive series victories.

In that finale, the Mets responded to Saturday's shutout in a big way, pounding Pittsburgh 11-1 to take the series. Bo Bichette had a monster afternoon, going 5-for-5 with three RBIs, while Luis Robert Jr., also with a monster day, drove in four runs and launched a two-run homer. Francisco Alvarez also went deep as New York collected 15 hits. Sean Manaea was just as impressive on the mound, striking out 11 over seven innings while allowing only one run and no walks. The blowout gave the Mets their fifth victory in six games and capped off one of their best weeks all year long.
