New York Mets Minor League Report: Gabrysh Brightens Lost Night

Friday was a bust for the New York Mets' minor-league system, All four full-season affiliates lost, Syracuse fell twice as it lost the completion of Thursday's suspended game and then the regular game Friday.

The bright spots were a handful of strong pitching performances. The best one was Luke Gabrysh's four-inning start for High-A Brooklyn against Jersey Shore. He allowed no runs and one hit, struck out six and walked none. He threw 39 of his 56 pitches for strikes.

Familiarity may have played a role. Gabrysh pitched for Jersey Shore before the Mets acquired him from the Philadelphia Phillies' organization prior to the Aug. 3 trade deadline in the Brooks Raley deal. Still, he has shown that he can dominate. The most intriguing indicator is his 30.8 percent strikeout rate.

On the flip side, he has a 10.7 percent walk rate and a 3.3 percent home run rate. All those rates combine for a FIP close to 5.00.

Luis R. Rodriguez replaced Gabrysh in the fifth and promptly allowed two unearned runs. They proved to be the difference in a 2-1 Cyclones loss.

Elsewhere in the organization . . .

Syracuse lost Thursday's suspended game to Jacksonville 4-2, and then lost the regular game 7-2. The regular contest was shortened to seven innings because of the completion. Shawn Ross and Nick Morabito drove in the Mets' runs in the seventh.

Binghamton's winning streak ended at 10 with a 10-3 loss to Portland. Noah Hall took a beating. He allowed eight runs (all earned) and 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings.  

St. Lucie lost 3-2 to Jupiter. Dylan Carey hit his first professional home run, a two-run blast in the seventh inning that accounted for the Mets' scoring.

DSL Mets Blue lost 18-17 in 10 innings to the DSL Nationals in a game that lasted six hours and two minutes. The Mets drew 21 walks in the game. Oscar Pena drew six of them. Jesus Minaya had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.

DSL Mets Orange shut out the DSL Marlins on two hits 3-0. Abner Meza (five innings) and Esteban Mejia (two innings) each allowed a hit. The Mets stole seven bases in the game.

Syracuse Goes Quietly As It Loses Twice

Syracuse managed just three hits in the regular game, and its runs in the seventh were scored without the benefit of a hit.

MJ Melendez, Eric Wagaman, and Ryan Clifford drew consecutive walks to load the bases. After a strikeout, Shawn Ross was hit by a pitch to force in Melendez, and leadoff man Nick Morabito lifted a sacrifice fly to score Wagaman. A strikeout ended the game.

Zach Peek started and took the loss. The big hit against him was a three-run homer with two out in the second inning.

Matt Seelinger gave Syracuse 1 1/3 hitless scoreless innings of relief. Dylan Ross followed with a clean inning and two strikeouts. Joe Jacques and Ben Simon then allowed the final four runs.

Binghamton Falls Hard As Run Ends

Portland jumped on Hall immediately. A two-run homer, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly put him behind 4-0 in the first.

Binghamton answered in the third with a Marco  Vargas sacrifice fly and Billy Amick RBI double.

Portland broke the game open with four runs in the fourth. A leadoff homer, an RBI double, an infield single and a bases-loaded walk pushed it to 8-2.

Amick went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Chris Suero, Yohairo Cuevas, and Emilien Pitre also had two hits,

One Sloppy Inning Dooms Brooklyn

Brooklyn was held to two hits and its run was scored without the benefit of a hit. Antonio Jimenez walked with one out in the third and moved to third when Carter Dierdorf reached on an error. Sammy Stafura lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Jimenez for a 1-0 lead.

The Cyclones gave up the lead in the fifth. A Colin Houck fielding error and a single put runners at the corners with none out. Two batters later, a throwing error by Ronald Hernandez on a fielder's choice grounder allowed both runners to score and put Jersey Shore up 2-1.

Rafi Vazquez, Elwis Mijares and Ryan Dollar followed Rodriguez out of the 'pen and combined for seven strikeouts over four innings. Mets pitchers struck out 14 BlueClaws batters in all.

Carey Goes Deep To Get St. Lucie Close

St. Lucie trailed 3-0 after six. In the seventh, Wyatt Vincent doubled and Carey followed with a drive to left-center for his first homer in 10 professional games.

Nathan Hall took the loss after allowing all three Jupiter runs over 1 1/3 innings. He allowed a leadoff homer in the first and a two-run single in the second.

St. Lucie's bullpen kept the team in the game. Tyler McLoughlin (1 2/3 innings), Jonathan Jimenez (three innings), Ernesto Mercedes (1 1/3 innings), and Julio Gonzalez (two-thirds of an inning) covered the final 22 outs. Jimenez, Mercedes and Gonzalez allowed no hits over the final five innings.
