I don't want to over-conclude, but our team's walk level is returning to where it was in 2008, when the Carlos Delgado-revival-led Mets had the second best offense in the league.

Season
Walks

NL Rank

20073.394
20083.822
20093.2513

We sit a mere 0.019 behind the Rockies, the sort of difference that fluctuatse based on start time. Don't know how much to conclude. Credit the new GM, new field boss, new batting coach? Dunno. But I like it and I think it may mean that there's offense in this team we haven't seen.

Gary Cohen addressed the emphasis on OBP in general last night, noted that as philosophy of taking pitches taking hold around MLB, batters hesitating to swing at pitches in hitters' counts. We saw it with Thole recently.

Like GC, I agree OBP a fine thing to emphasize, but there is an offensive downside.

Then again, the Mets are a bunch of sluggers lately, so this isn't our problem.

On the flip side, Mets pitchers are walking 3.7 batters per 9 innings, essentially tied for second worst in the league with Cincinnati and Colorado, trailing only Chicago.

Yeah, they just have a better approach I think. They do more "First pitch fastball hitting" as Kieth notes all the time, and it seems like they're actually swinging on hitters counts more often. I think it was almost a year that they didn't swing last year 3-0.

Seven runs on five hits today.

Bingo.
