Gonna be nearly impossible to keep up with this game today while
there's two NY football games on -- which to me is utterly ridiculous btw.

Sunday, September 27th (All times eastern)

New York Mets (66-89) at Florida Marlins (83-72), 1:10 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Pat Misch (1-4, 5.59) Florida - Josh Johnson (15-5, 3.12)

(Sports Network) - The Marlins need all the victories they can get. If history is any indication, they should be in line for one today with Josh Johnson facing the Mets.

The right-hander will try to remain perfect in his career against New York in Florida's finale of a three-game set with the visiting club at Land Shark Stadium.

Johnson is a perfect 7-0 with a 2.30 earned run average in nine lifetime starts versus the Mets, allowing just 15 runs and two homers against them with 45 strikeouts. He has faced the club four times in 2009, going 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA.

The 25-year-old is coming off a loss to the Phillies on Tuesday that dropped him to 15-5 with a 3.12 ERA this season. He gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings last time out, though he also struck out 10 in the 92-pitch start.

New York starter Pat Misch has had the opposite luck when facing the Marlins. He gave up five runs over six innings in a loss to them on September 9, falling to 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA lifetime versus Florida.

That loss was the first of three in a row for the 28-year-old lefty, who has allowed 17 runs over 12 1/3 innings in that span for a 12.41 ERA. He lasted just 1 1/3 innings on Monday versus the Braves and gave up eight runs on seven hits, including three homers, before exiting.

After blowing a ninth-inning lead in Friday's opener, the Marlins used a seven-run fifth inning to put the Mets away yesterday. Cameron Maybin highlighted the burst with a three-run homer.

"It's a blast. [Friday night] was a heartbreaker," said Maybin after the game. "We continued to battle and tonight was back and forth."

Jorge Cantu added three hits, an RBI and scored twice in the Marlin's third win in four games. With Colorado's loss, Florida moved with four games of the National League Wild Card leaders with seven to play.

Atlanta is 2 1/2 games behind Colorado, and the Marlins visit the Braves for three games following this test that wraps their 2009 home schedule. Florida ends the regular season with three games in Philadelphia.

Fernando Tatis hit a two-run home run while Carlos Beltran added a solo shot for the Mets, who have lost four of their last five. John Maine was clobbered for seven runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings.

"I thought one good thing he was doing was pitching in," said Mets manager Jerry Manuel of Maine.

Florida has won 11 of 17 versus New York this year, taking five of eight so far at home.

Kevin Burkhart tweets that Josh Johnson has been scratched due to the flu and Chris Volstad gets the start. Beltran and Wright to get the day off. And the Mets will have water stations at each base so the players can hydrate after running for 90 feet before they have to run 90 more.

Ordinarily I'd say that a Misch vs Johnson matchup with no Beltran & no Wright would equal about a 5% shot of Mets winning.
But between Johnson being scratched and the fact that no Wright is probably an improvement right now I'd say we're up to a 32.6% shot.
Tack on a 3-zip lead w/5 innings to go and we're closing in on 50/50

Well, Anderson Hernandez runs hard, anyhow.

Mentally renewing Jeff Francouer's contract.

Francoeur, when he's smacking line-drives around the park like he's been doing recently, is like the pretty girl that smiles at you from across the room.
It's great while it lasts but it may be a long time before you see it again.

Anyone who had Pat Misch tying Livan Hernandez for the club lead in complete games this season please come to the main desk and pick up your prize.

A complete game shutout for Misch!

The other thing about that catch is that he really didn't display prodigious ups. Great grab, but --- for a big shot high school jock --- jumping may not be part of his athletic palette.

Great D today.

Exactly one year between Mets CG shutouts. Last one was also against the Marlins, and probably had a little more oomph to it. But Misch's tealwashing had one thing going for it that Santana's didn't: It just happened. Every little bit of something to root for at the tail end of 2009 is appreciated.

This combination may not work for everyone here, but Mets win, Giants win, Jets win all in the same three-hour window...gosh, that's nice.
