Injured Reyes has long way to go before return

As the baseball season closes in on July 4, the Mets appear no closer to activating their human pyrotechnic display than when shortstop Jose Reyes was lost to the team with a bad wheel a full month ago.

A day after general manager Omar Minaya spoke hopefully of Reyes attempting to "catch some ground balls" and noted that Reyes has been "running on the treadmill" for several days, Reyes said yesterday that he had done neither and still has pain "if I try to do some quick move."

Yesterday marked the Mets' 26th straight game without Reyes, who first developed tendinitis behind his right calf, then tore a hamstring tendon in the same leg on June 3, the day before he was due to come off the disabled list.

"I don't run yet," Reyes said before yesterday's game, when he dismissed the idea of taking ground balls by pointing out, "It's raining." Besides, he said, "I don't worry about . I worry about running.

I like to be on the field; it's hard for me, tough to watch the game on TV. But I haven't been hurt like this in a long time. I don't get this type of injury since 2004, so I'll continue my same routine as before.

Maine, Perez to start

John Maine and Oliver Perez will start tomorrow for Class A St. Lucie in a doubleheader against Port Charlotte. That will officially begin the rehab clock for each player, with a 30-day limit on such assignments as soon as they pitch in a game that charges for admission. Maine is eligible to come off the DL tomorrow, so there is a possibility he could rejoin the Mets' rotation after this rehab start. Perez, whose sore knee no longer is an issue, is believed to be further away, perhaps another week or two from returning to the Mets.

and a healthy MRI for Beltran. If he goes down also, you could shelve Reyes..
