On the occasion of the official transfer of the reins from George Steinbrenner over to son Hal, longtime (now retired) Newsday columnist Steve Jacobsen hasn't forgotten that all the recent winning and claims of "softening" over time (more likely just the result of fading into the background due to age and illness) doesn't change the fact that George was an ass.

"That Man" was how Jacobsen always used to refer to him in print as a way not to put his name in print and thus feed his publicity addiction and it's how he refers to him today in a guest column[/url:2yhgdkod].

Wally Matthews, on the other hand, waxes his massive love jones for Big George in an erotic novella carried by, of all papers, The Boston Herald.

Isn't Jacobson giving Gene Michael credit for Bob Watson's reign?

Watson was part of it but Stick was more the behind the scenes guy in the years prior to Watson where he went about procuing some of the young talent and protecting it where a non-wounded monarch or his henchmen may have dealt it away. It was those interference-free years which set up the dynasty era.

I believe George was pretty much un-suspended by the time Watson got there and thus had to deal with the limited power that goes with the NYY GM job.

Looks like the Botson Herald is picking up Newsday's entire run of sports columns. Not sure why.

I like how Mathews picks out the Sheffield negotiations like they were some sort of brilliant business maneuver by GMSIII (they weren't, it was a middle fo the road deal for both sides and Sheffield will complain about the location of the sunrise) and fail to mention the Winfield situation where Steinbrenner looked like a fool by not realising what he had agreed to.

I also like how he brings up Wellington Mara as the one guy on the same level even though he was another guy who was much reviled earlier in his ownership career (for different reasons than Steiny) before those times were whitewashed out of existance as he aged and the team improved. I doubt Matthews even sees the irony.
