Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 This was partly inspired by Wednesday's game ... but not really.Mostly I just had a few phrases kicking around in my head so I started having some fun with Ollie's control problems and Bobby's lyrics. The thing with Dylan songs, of course, is that they often have an almost infinite number of verses - limited only by the extent of his imagination and that they always come around to the same, or at least a similar, tag line at the end of each. But since I didn't feel like writing any more beyond this initial stab, I figgered it could make for a good group off-day project (well, not quite off - but no game until 9PM).So if anyone wants to play add-a-verse just take what I started and go nuts. Half the roster could have their own verse before we're done.Early one evening I'm watching the MetsOllie's out on the moundKeith going on about his tootsie-pops'til I just had to mute the soundPerez his pitches fall around the plategetting a call is goin' to be toughRick surely don't like his drop-down pitchand no strike-zone is big enoughAnd me I'm sitting on the edge of the couchclouds filling up my mindwondering if I care too much or if I need to search and find - a hobby newto replace the Orange and Blue
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 As Ollie can't control his pitch locationI can't control the pitch of my voiceHis is an issue of mechanics and suchI guess mine is just a matter of choiceAs he left the mound and washed his hands of the messI's about to do the sameBut I've always had a problem just walking awayI guess Kingman and Dad are to blameSo I logged onto the Crane Pool"Is Willie at the end of the line?""Is Clemens gonna be locked in a prison?""Has Buzz taken leave of his mind?" --- What can we doTo save the orange and blue?
Guest sharpie Guests Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Ollie had a job near the old steel millsIt was working out fine for a spellBut he couldnt control his breaking pitchAnd one day the ax just fell.So they traded him east to pitch at SheaIn a season that I did enjoyMakin the squad for the playoff runRight outside of Willets Point. But while he had some small successThe past was close behind,We need a steady starterBut his pitches get hit well and they just flewOver the orange and blue.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 (edited) He was workin' at a furious pace As I called out for a beer,I just kept lookin' at the side of the plateThat his pitches could not come nearAnd later on as the crowd thinned outI's just about to do the same,When I saw him there with his thinning hairSaid to me, "Don't remember my name?"I uttered somethin' underneath my breath,And studied the lines on his face.I must admit I felt a little uneasyWent I reached out to shake the hand of Mo Alou,Mangled up and blue. Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Wasn't my idea to lock up CastilloFour years just seemed insaneHis game seemed built on infield hitsAnd his knees were still in painBut Minaya walked into his hospital roomAnd layed that contract downAnd I guess I would have signed the thing myselfI'm a fan but I'm not a clownBut all if it came back to meIn the second the other dayBases loaded and a grounder to himHe just bobbled the game away --- like a kangarooFucking orange and blue
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2008 Author Posted May 2, 2008 Reyes popped up the first pitch of the frameover-swung of course"And Castillo can't hit" cry the fans on the FANbut ya gotta consider the sourceSo when his bloop dropped in he stood there on 1stand he was taking a lead off the basethen he swiped a bag off a slow curve balland the deal looked like less of a wasteI watched Wright take strikes for an 0-2 countand thought he looked ready to sittil he fouled one off and let some close ones slidethen found a fat one to hit - and a run accruedfor the orange and blue
Guest sharpie Guests Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I snuck down in the 8th to the LogeUsed a ramp and not the stairsThere's crap music blasting though the game's a routAnd revolution's in the airThen fans starting into booing in drovesAnd something inside of them died. They'd hang their heads on the way to the benchAnd give interviews snideAnd me well I couldn't take it no more and was wishing that I had a joint,I always think on days like this that I'd even sniff a pint of glueFor the orange and blue.
Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Great stuff -- I don't think I can join in because I'm too tangled up in the original right now -- my freshman comp students are writing term papers on "Blood on the Tracks."
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 5, 2008 Posted May 5, 2008 The Mets flew off to play Arizona The best team under the sun Owings, they said, had a heckuva batAnd not too shabby a gunWith Haren matched up against SantanaA win was gonna be toughBut Moises had come along for the rideHe'd been rehabbing long enoughAnd it suddenly seemed the execution was thereAnd Willie was strategically soundOur projected lineup was finally in placeWhatever we'd lost was found --- and we took twoWay to go, orange and blue
