For the second game of the series, Mark Mulder made his long anticipated return to the mound for the Cardinals. Apparently, the Mets weren't impressed. The Mets pounded Mulder for 9 earned runs in 3 nightmarish innings for Cardinal fans, but they were truly heavenly to Mets fans.

Staked to a sizable early lead, Mets starter Steve Trachsel struggled to hold off the Cardinals. A succession of mostly effective relievers were able to hold off the Cardinals and secure the Mets sixth straight win.
