In truth, the idea that post season home field advantage (if there is a post season) can be thrown away by a another team's closer really, really irks me.

Not that there's any gaurantee that the Mets will be in the post season, or that their record would be good enough to get home field advantage under the old system.

But the idea that the actions of a Trevor Looper in a hokey exhibition game should have even the tiniest potential impact on post-season play...

You know what though? Home field should be determined by best record and if its the Tiggers or Chisox then odds are they'll have the better record anyway. So really it will probably be as it should be.

As I said, the likely outcome is probably not changed--and who knows if the Mets will get into the postseason and beyond (SBS regulations require me to add these disclaimers).

But it is more the process than the result which irks.

It's not because of the Tiger/White Sox records that the likely outcome wasn't changed. Before this "now it counts" twist to the All Star game, home field advantage alternated each year. The Yankees had it in 2000, so even numbered years have been AL, at least since the 1994 strike. (Before that, even numbered years were NL, as in 1986.)

Did you see the small item in the Daily News today? Because Tom Glavine was unavailable to play in the game, Selig is considering a rule that All Star team pitchers be prohibited from starting on the Sunday before the All Star break. Glavine doesn't like it, and neither do I. It's an awful idea, one I hope goes nowhere.
