The Upside of Anger

D-Dad and I saw this on pay-per-view last night. My choice. He might forgive me one day. If I had dragged him to see it in the theater, though, he probably wouldn't have forgiven me.

It's not horrible. It's not unwatchable. But it's not great. It has a mediocre script and plotline, and it's only saved by an excellent cast. Joan Allen stars as the mother of four insanely beautiful daughters, and the story starts with the realization that her husband has left her to run off to Sweden with his secretary. Kevin Costner is her neighbor, her "drinking buddy", and (surprise!) an ex-baseball player. This is a talky film without a lot of action, and it's a character study with largely unlikeable characters. Only the superb acting allows you to have some empathy for this dysfunctional bunch.

The surprise ending only serves to illustrate the silliness of the plotline.

See it if you are a fan of any of the particular actors (I could give or take Costner, but I have loved Joan Allen ever since I saw her on Broadway in The Heidi Chronicles), but, otherwise, feel free to give this one a miss.

Who gave this a 9? I'd be really curious to know why someone found this so great.

And sorry - I meant to go all the way up to 10 as an option.
