Guest Bret Sabermetric Guests Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 A caller to Steve Somers' show just offered the news that Ron Swoboda, who has a call-in show on a New Orleans station, has been unreachable (like plenty of others, of course) for a few days.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ron Swoboda and everyone else affected by the Hurricane Katrina tragedy.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2005 Posted September 3, 2005 Strangely enough, one of the first things that occurred to me before New Orleans completely descended into hell was "Ron Swoboda is a sportscaster there." I had never seen him doing the sports as a New Orleans sportscaster but I knew that's where he wound up.Funny what you see when you look at the world through Mets-colored glasses. Here's hoping he and everybody find safety and their loved ones.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 I haven't been able to find anything about this in the news.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 Well you can't find anything about it because it's not a news story. All that has "happened" so far is that a caller to WFAN who claimed to know Swoboda said he couldn't reach him or the TV station he does work for, neither of which seems all that surprising considering the state of phone service and business shutdowns at the moment plus the fact that most people who lived in N.O. got the hell out of there.'Not being able to reach' and 'missing' aren't necc the same thing.
Guest SI Metman Guests Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 Rocky is due in LI for a charity softball game at CitiBank Park (home of the LI Ducks) this Saturday. I guess everyone can find out then.

Usually the host gets it, and it gets filed away in the circular cabinent unless more people start calling up with the same questions.Very rare (unless its later on in the same show) that a host will follow up information with either a verification or non-verificationBTW funny case in point to that, one morning back in the mid 1990's a caller calls up Richard Neer asking how the Mets had Kevin Brown in their system and just "LET HIM GO!" Neer said he hadn't heard anything about the Mets having Kevin Brown (talking about the current MFY of course) and would look it up. Course the situation never came up again I'll bet you from 1997-2004 there were a handfull of calls wondering how the Mets could have let "Pedro Martinez" get away without the host saying "Uh, thats not the same Pedro that got his start with the Dodgers, traded to Montreal and is now with the Red Sox. The Mets' Pedro Martinez was signed by the Padres, traded to the Astros (part of the huge Ken Caminiti deal in 1994) aquired for Jeff Barry, released and played for the Reds and his big league career ended in 1997"Course this was back in the day before baseball-reference.com and ultimatemet.com became vital in studio reference guidesSteve
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2005 Posted September 6, 2005 The caller in this case certainly sounded sincere and it's not like he offered any info that Rocky was in trouble, only that he couldn't reach him and started to wonder. He just brought it up to the radio station in case they might hear something.

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 This showed up on the Astros site today.]Looking for friends: Matt Galante, special assistant to GM Tim Purpura, spent many years as the manager of the New Orleans Zephyrs, which was the Astros' Triple-A club for more than a decade until this year. Galante has been trying to contact two media types he became close to during his time in New Orleans: Ron Swoboda, a former Orioles and Mets outfielder who did radio and TV work in New Orleans, and Peter Barrouquere, a now-retired beat writer who covered the Zephyrs for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Since Hurricane Katrina touched down last week, Galante has been wondered about the well-being of his two friends. "I know them both very well," Galante said. "We haven't been able to contact them. I just want to know that they're OK."
