Did Dwight Gooden get arrested again or something?

He's getting a huge number of hits today on the UMDB, and they're not all coming from the same source. A lot of people are doing Google, Yahoo, etc. searches on his name today.

Anybody have any idea why? I searched in Google News, and there's nothing news. I did a straight Google search, and the UMDB was the second page listed! (And maybe that explains it. Maybe that page was recently re-ranked, and it moved up to a prominent notch.)

Any articles on the 20th anniversary of the Cy Young year, or about the Astros-Mets in '86 playoffs may have done it. Dunno otherwise.

To play center field?

Gooden is profiled in a USA Today cover story today, under the headline "Demons Still Haunt Gooden, Familiy." Don't know how that correlates to increased traffic yesterday, but I'd bet you'll see more today,

Oakland picked up Jay Payton's 2006 option.

Bowa vs. Steinbrenner would be interesting.

A question, how did you put your articles like you did with the names?...

Guest MFS62

Yes, how do you title the links?

Later

First, make sure the Disable BBCCode in this post box is unchecked.

Then it's [ url= (without spaces)

Then you put in the site

Then you close the bracket

Then you type in the name you want

Then you type [/ url (again, without spaces)

Then you close the bracket.

Good luck!

I used HTML. Here's the post I did above, except replacing < and > with parentheses so the code appears instead of the links.

(a href=http://www.nypost.com/sports/29845.htm target=blank)Rusty Staub(/a), happy for the good peeps of Houston.

(a href=http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getsp.pl5?sb20051021a1.htm target=blank)Bobby Valentine(/a), in championship mode.
Replace "(" and ")" above with "<" and ">" and you're a linking fool.

Assistant Coach Bobby Jones, already a Hall of Famer at Fresno State, gets his jersey retired.

So does that mean that Bobby Jones isn't permitted to wear his own number as an (interim) assistant coach?

Good point.

I was wondering if Jersey Jones was going to get his fresno retired by anybody.

He can probably still wear it, but no one else can. Cheo Cruz's number 25 was retired by the Astros, but he still wears it as their 1B coach.

Thanks. I've always wondered that.

Bobby Bonilla took his daughter to the Greenwich HS college night Thursday night. An interesting mix of celebrities and ordinary rich people; Tom Bergeron (the Hollywood Squares/AFV host) was there with his kid, and apparently Cody Gifford is a sophomore there, so maybe Frank & Kathie Lee will be around next year.

The ceremonial first pitch, for the first game of the World Series, was thrown by Bo Jackson, but caught by Robin Ventura.

J.C. Martin was a member of the 1959 Sox.

Bob Shaw, also, apparently. Thanks, Joe Gergen.

Rusty Staub is taken to task. (The Globe has also challenged Pedro Martinez on this score.)

David Cone isn't so sure he wants to join the Mets broadcast crew.

The Star Ledger claims inside knowledge that Bobby Valentine is heading to the Devil Rays.

Robin Ventura, in addition to Tim Wallach, has reportedly turned down an offer from the Pirates to be their hitting coach.

Jose Vizcaino blew some minds last night.

The Globe also recognizes Mo Vaughn as a good charitable contributor.

How can he be laughing YOUR ass off?

"Vinegar Bend" Mizell recalled by Houston Chronicle columnist Leon Hale:

Q: Do you remember "Vinegar Bend" Mizell?

A: You bet. Wilmer Mizell, from Vinegar Bend, Ala. In the early '50s he was a hot pitcher with the Houston Buffs, and Buffs owner Alan Russell once brought the entire population of Vinegar Bend (one busload) to Houston to watch Mizell pitch. Mizell went to the majors as a Cardinal, pitched in a World Series for Pittsburg (sic) and finished his career with the Mets. Then he became a U.S. congressman from Mississippi.

I don't recall anything about his record in Congress, but as a pitcher Vinegar Bend was always a little bit wild.

The Mariners (are they American?) are making changes to their coaching staff, and Mel Stottlemyre and Roger Mcdowell are among the candidates.

TheStreet.com has been raking in beaucoup bucks since Lenny Dykstra started luring morons to their site.

Former Met prospect Rudy Hernandez returns as hitting coach for the Beloit Snappers.
