Longtime Mets executive Joe McDonald, who served as general manager from 1975 to 1980, has passed away at the age of 97.

That's a long time to have an ugly first line of one's obituary pre-written.  Fortunately for him, the fans saw Grant as the master of that trade, and McDonald as the guy stuck with the bag.

Native New York guy — from Staten Island with a detour through Fordham University.  He was in the same class as Captain Kangaroo!

One of the issues with living so long is that you increase the odds of out-living one or more of your children. Joe Mac out-lived two of his three. Only NYC/Philly sports yakker Jody survived him.
