kcmets Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 Nice interview, thanks for sharing. What's with all the [brackets]? Does Davey have a potty mouth at age 80 and they're editing out curse words? lol
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Author Posted October 8, 2023 In some cases, the editor likely thought pronouns Davey used weren't clear. If Davey said "he," the editor (or writer) figured explicitly making it "Gooden" would clarify who he was talking about, but since you can't put words in a subject's mouth, you use the brackets to indicate "this is who Davey is talking about."The other use presumes the reader might not know who Nelson Doubleday and Fred Wilpon are, since they weren't previously introduced into the story, thus [owners], in this case.Good observation about use of brackets -- it's one of those things about which the usage is implied, but the reader isn't given footnotes on why they're used. Also, [Davey] probably did some [cursing].
roger_that Old-Timey Member Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 I'm with KC. Most were OK, but this one, for exampleCashen didn't see talent on the level that I saw it, whether it was Lenny Dykstra or Kevin Mitchell -- guys I thought were instrumental to our club. He traded them all. [Cashen] might have disagreed with what I thoughtbugged me. Totally unnecessary. "He" is clearly "Cashen"--that's why "He" starts the previous sentence. No ambiguity whatsoever.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 8, 2023 Posted October 8, 2023 [Davey] totally approved the trade of [Dykstra]. [Cashen] tended to run deals by him when they involved established MLB personnel.
