Coco (2017)

I began watching this one this evening and hope to finish it tomorrow. So far, it has some interesting parallels with Soul — a protagonist who is born to be a musician, but isn't supported by his family, despite apparently inheriting the gift from a late family member, along with a passage between the worlds of the living and the dead.

I'm generally not a Pixar enthusiast. I watched this because while at a workshop outside of Oaxaca two years ago I was introduced to the woman who was the model for the grandmother in the movie. So then I had to see it. It was nice having Mexican folklore front and center and was enjoyable enough but I felt the last half was muddled and kind of dragged.

OK, but pales in comparison to the much superior Book of Life, which used the same themes.

Not sure where you got that.



They both are about someone who wants to play music, but whose family disapproves. The protagonist ends up going into the land of the dead and has to make his way back.



In addition, The Book of Life actually has something important to say about life. Not to mention that Book of Life is far more imaginative in all respects, avoiding the cookie-cutter plotting of most Disney films, and has far more distinctive animation.
