2019 Roster (Projected)

Life being what it is, the 2019 roster thread is launching a little late. For that I apologize, but hey, you know the lay of the land.

The Starting Pitchers project as the stablest unit. You can say what you want about The Mickmeister, but for whatever reason, the team’s starting pitchers all seem to have finished the season healthy, and that reflects on him and his staff. They also all tended to all finish the season strong, even if Steven Matz had spots of stickiness over the summer, and Jason Vargas spent the top of the season injured and the middle of it double-stinky.

One thing that they have had coming into seasons in recent years has been a depth chart of 8-10 guys ready to step in. That’s the sort of good luck that’s partially been a byproduct of bad luck, as a lot of guys have stepped into rotations in previous years, causing a bigger corral of options to develop as everybody gets healthy. Not so much this year, as the team maintained it’s health the second half of the season, and even when there were spot starts to be had, none among Corey Oswald, Drew Gagnol, P.J. Conlon, etc. particularly hinted at big league readiness, but I Mickey seemed committed to keeping Oswald in the rotation and getting him as much experience as he could. I think Gagnol comes out of spring training the sixth guy, though.

In a much bigger state of instability is the Bullpen. Only two spots seem locked up. While most recent callups had their moments here and there, only Drew Smith showed consistency, but even he’s got no guarantees. Look for one or two vests to be brought in for meaningful $$, as well as some other moves.

Also facing a lot of question marks is the corps of Catchers. While Travis d’Arnaud could be ready for opening day, that’s probably not most likely. Kevin Plawecki had his moments, both on offense and defense, but if anything, he established that he can be a big league backup. They may not go large, but I expect a starting-quality veteran to join the staff in 2019 — a Barajas or something.

The Infield is largely set, with second occupied by a guy blessed with productivity that’s been as consistent as it has been surprising, short occupied by a guy blessed by organizational commitment, and third blessed by a guy with top-dollar contract. Only first is open — and that could fall to a guy who is not necessarily healthy (Flores), a guy who is not necessarily established (Smith), and a guy who is not necessarily on the roster (Alonso).

I don’t think we’ll be finding out the answer anytime soon. T.J. Rivera should be healthy by then, however, and hopefully finds his way back to the spot on the depth chart he had when he got hurt.

The Mets don’t have a fifth outfielder for the time being, but if there is to be such a roster sport, instead of 100th reliever, Smith probably spent enough time to be penciled in there for now. He could break camp as a guy that divides his time between left, first, and coming off the bench. Heck, it’s how he finished 2018.

I like d’Arnaud and I like Plaw, but catcher seems like the softest spot to improve at right now.
