  1. Elliott Maddox has said he considers himself having been a Yankee, while he merely played for the Mets. Let him analyze somebody else's team.
  2. Francesa is friendly to the Mets in the way Biff was friendly to George McFly in Back to the Future. Jeff Wilpon seems to have decided he is the most effective megaphone/loudest voice available, and maybe Mike'll be nice to us if we feed him info. They only acted on the Doc autographed wall kerfuffle last April once Mike decreed it was the right thing to do. FWIW, Francesa couldn't be more condescending toward the Jets either.
  3. I'd vote for Roberto Alomar if he'd agree to retire before 2002.
  4. To make this as difficult a choice as it deserves to be: You gotta vote for the clinching of the N.L. East, a singular Met event in the 2000s. Such an eruption of exultation at Shea, 18 years in the making. What a wonderful night. You gotta vote for Johan's gem. Such a clutch performance at such a clutch time, one great player doing all he can to ward off a franchise's demons in its ballparks dying days. What a wonderful day. You gotta vote for the Marlon Anderson game. How excellent and improbable the whole evening was, and what a breath-holding play the game turned on from such an unlikely source. What a wonderful night. You gotta vote for Game Four of the 2000 NLCS. All those doubles. It was like an attack on St. Louis. Shea set a record for shaking that night. No way we would be denied the flag. What a wonderful night. You gotta vote for the winning of the pennant in 2000. It's the only pennant won, and it was won in such dominant fashion in every phase of the game. We were elevated as we hadn't been elevated in 14 years. What a wonderful night. You gotta vote for Bobby Jones' 1-hitter. Bob Murphy himself called it the greatest pitching performance the Mets ever had. Homegrown Met who had struggled so was never better. And he clinched an NLDS. What a wonderul day and night. You gotta vote for the Endy catch. The mere fact that it transcends the final outcome of that game and series, how it remains iconic for catch made over the wall...and how you felt when he caught it. What a wonderful moment. You gotta vote for the Benny homer. Talk about perseverance, his and ours. We grew colder, he set us all aflame. We showed the Giants what for with that swing, that we would not be denied. Such love in the Upper Deck. What a wonderful day and night. You gotta vote for Piazza in September 2001. Meant so much to so many. Speaks to baseball's power to distract and maybe heal just a little. Speaks to Mike's power, too. What a wonderful night. You gotta vote for the ten-run inning. Everything was perfect: a huge comeback against our bitter rivals, our biggest players, Alfonzo and Piazza, driving in five runs after Brave pitching walked in so many others...redemption! And fireworks! What a wonderful night. None of these are bad choices.
  5. I know, the 2000s are so last decade, but I've been requested by the vacationing Metirish, to complete the survey. So here are the Top 10 from the Top 25 poll. 1) - Mets clinch NL East - Various Mets parade around with booze and cigars - 09/18/2006 2) - Santana's gem from 2008 that temporarily saved the season (actually put off the inevitable) - 09/27/2008 3) - Marlon Anderson's inside-the-park homer - as remembered on the UMDB.....lets not forget Floyd 1 out in the bottom of the 9th at Shea and the Angels have electric Francisco Rodriguez closing. Anderson, pinch hitting, drives one just shy of the track in right center, with RF Vladimir Guerrero running towards center and CF Steve Finley sliding while running toward RF to make the catch; he can't and it bounces off his leg and rolls into a vacant RF; he gets up and tracks the ball down, all the while Anderson is busting it around the basepaths, and despite a perfect relay throw, Anderson just beats the throw home to tie the game at 2. His face slammed into the catcher; he's there laying in pain, but when he gets up, oh what an ovation. And the capper: Cliff Floyd hit a 3-run walkoff homer in the 10th. - 06/11/2005 4) - - Game 4 of the 2000 NLCS, 10/15/2000 - Mets are down 2 and rally big for the win Perez 2B Alfonzo 2B Piazza 2B Ventura 2B Zeile groundout Agbayani 2B and the Mets are up 4-2. 5) - Hampton 3-hit shutout and the Mets clinch their only pennant of the '00s - NLCS - Game 5 - 10/16/2000 6) - Bobby Jones - 10/08/00-NLDS - Game 4 versus the Giants , Jones one hits the Giants. 7) - Endy Chavez - "The Catch" - Game 7, 2006 NLCS - 10/19/06 8) - Benny Agbayani's game-winning homer in the 2000 NLDS.- 10/07/2000 9) - Piazza in the first baseball game played in New York after September 11. - 09/21/2001 10) - Mets score 10 runs in the 8th to beat Atlanta 11-8 - 06/30/2000
  6. SNY airing all five Mets Yearbooks thus far produced Saturday at 5:00 PM. Watch/record.
  7. 1980s runoff: Doc 58% Mex 42% Your CPF-polled Mets of the Decades, then: 1960s: Tom Seaver 1970s: Tom Seaver 1980s: Dwight Gooden 1990s: Edgardo Alfonzo 2000s: David Wright
  8. Thanks all for some good calls. Figureoa should have been obvious given that he's the last Met I saw throw a pitch. I also missed Casanova on a Sporcle of Mets catchers yesterday. Some guys just don't stick in one's mind. I'd add Rich Rodriguez to this roster, though I wish I didn't have to. Mazzilli and Walker each made the majors as Mets before leaving the first time. Since I was thinking (but didn't specify) minor leaguers who had never been in the majors before they played as minor league Mets, that would also count out Gunderson (who actually didn't play for any other organization between his '93 Mets minor league stint and subsequent release and his '94 re-signing; either way, he had pitched in the Majors before coming to the Mets). Lou Thornton scored a walkoff run as a pinch-runner in a big game against the Cubs in September '89. Juan Samuel drove him in, moving the Mets to within 3-1/2 with 25 to play. Later, I'd confuse him regularly with Lou Collier, whom Expo GM Omar Minaya acquired from the Mets in exchange for the much-traveled pre-star Jason Bay. If Bay passes his physical and doesn't disintegrate before April 5, here's the list, thus far, of Lost Boys Found as I have it with your considerable help: Jason Bay Raul Casanova Endy Chavez Brian Daubach Nelson Figueroa Mauro Gozzo Jerry Morales Guillermo Mota Angel Pagan Rich Rodriguez Lou Thornton Fernando Via Mickey Weston
  9. Jason Bay joins Endy Chavez and Angel Pagan as onetime Met farmhands who were sent away to return as actual Mets. Anybody else fit that description? Not looking for former major league Mets who came back a la Burnitz, Jorgensen, that Seaver fellow. Looking for guys who never worked their way up the chain the first time.
  10. Our two runoff candidates and the third-party entrant who missed the cut all had their moments with substances not quite kosher. Gary Carter didn't sniff anything stronger than Northville Gasoline fumes and received no support.
  11. Do the Red Sox get Steve Reed or Jason Middlebrook in return -- or both?
  12. The vest years of our lives.
  13. If Bay isn't a Met, what will Francesa's excuse be? The physical? Some nebulous eleventh-hour offer from somewhere else? That it was Rex Ryan's fault? Or will he just insist, "I NEVER SAID BAY WAS COMING TO THE METS!"
  14. Doc vs. Mex runoff here. Vote NOW!!!
  15. It's been said there can only be one. So choose just one.
  16. Chan Ho Park wants his money back from Chad Kreuter. I want Chan Ho Park's money back from April 30, 2007.
  17. You decided: Met Player of the 1960s Seaver 53% Kranepool 32% Grote 5% Hunt 5% Jones 5% Met Player of the 1970s Seaver 90% Milner 5% Stearns 5% Met Player of the 1980s Gooden 39% Hernandez 39% Strawberry 22% Met Player of the 1990s Alfonzo 40% Franco 25% Piazza 20% Hundley 10% Olerud 5% Met Player of the 2000s Wright 75% Piazza 17% Beltran 6% Benitez 3% Most Crushing Ending of the 2000s 2007 34% 2006 31% 2000 22% 2008 9% 2001 3% Best Season of the 2000s 2006 62% 2000 38% Nightmare Season of the 2000s 2009 83% 2002 11% 2003 6% I decided the 2000s were the most disappointing Met decade ever.
  18. APRIL 26 & 27, 2002 Back-to-back no-hit bids, by Shawn Estes on Friday night and Pedro Astacio on Saturday afternoon, each against the Brewers, each carried to the seventh. Estes makes Jay Payton's second-inning home run off Glendon Rusch hold up for a 1-0 complete game one-hitter. Astacio, while a car fire rages in the Shea lot that will someday be Citi Field, combines with Armando Benitez on a three-hitter for the 2-1 victory. Things look good for those crisp 2002 Mets.
  19. The 2007 Mets perished in an ungodly wreck.
